1 Timothy 4:12 - “Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity.”
2 Timothy 2:22 - “Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.”
Titus 2:11-12 - “For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age,…”
Hebrews 13:4 - “Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; but fornicators and adulterers God will judge.”
James 1:14-15 - “But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death. “
1 Peter 1:14-16 - “as obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, ...but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, "BE HOLY, FOR I AM HOLY."
1 Peter 2:11 - “Beloved, I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul,
2 Peter 2:14 - “...having eyes full of adultery and that cannot cease from sin, enticing unstable souls. They have a heart trained in covetous practices, and are accursed children.”
1 John 2:16 - “For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.”
Jude 1:7 - “...as Sodom and Gomorrah,… having given themselves over to sexual immorality and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.”
Revelation 2:18; 20-22 - "‘And to the angel of the church in Thyatira write,…’ Nevertheless I have a few things against you, because you allow that woman Jezebel... to teach and seduce My servants to commit sexual immorality and eat things sacrificed to idols. And I gave her time to repent of her sexual immorality, and she did not repent. Indeed I will cast her into a sickbed, and those who commit adultery with her into great tribulation, unless they repent of their deeds.”
One truth we can and should note from these texts is not just how many passages warn against sexual impropriety within the church, but the fact that it is dealt with in almost every single New Testament Letter/Epistle! In fact, there are even more passages that deal with the subject, but these were used to show that this is not just a minor topic addressed in scripture; but instead, is indeed one of the very themes of New Testament doctrine / teaching / admonition.
It’s easy to say, “That’ll never happen to me/us!” But we must remember, “Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed that he does not fall.” (I Corinthians 10:12) After all, sexual immorality has likely occurred in every modern day church at one point or another. It’s foolish to think it can’t happen here. So, let us always be on guard against sexual immorality and do everything in our power to remain pure and holy and righteous. God demands purity in His church, amongst His people. To lose our purity, is to lose our identity, and if unrepentant… to lose our soul forever.
