Can Christians be Lost? - Part 1

July 22, 2018

A prevailing belief amongst many self-professed followers of Christianity is that once one becomes a Christian they are forever saved. They cannot lose their own salvation. This is often cited as “once saved always saved” doctrine. But is this doctrine truly of God? Consider the following passages. Consider their context. What does the Bible teach individually and collectively? All passages written to Christians:

Acts 8:22-23 – “Therefore repent of this wickedness of yours, and pray the Lord that if possible, the intention of your heart may be forgiven you. For I see that you are in the gall of bitterness and in the bondage of iniquity (8:13)”

Romans 11:22 - “Behold then the kindness and severity of God; to those who fell, severity, but to you, God’s kindness, if you continue in His kindness; otherwise you will be cut off.”

I Corinthians 15:1-2 – “Now I make known to you, brethren, the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received, in which also you stand, by which also you are saved, if you hold fast the word which I preached to you, unless you believed in vain.”

II Corinthians 6:1 – And working together with Him, we also urge you not to receive the grace of God in vain.” (Chapter 6 and 7:1 to understand the meaning of this statement)

Galatians 5:1 – “It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery.”

Galatians 5:4 – “You have been severed from Christ, you who are seeking to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace.”

Galatians 6:1 – “Brethren, even if a man is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, lest you too also be tempted.”

Ephesians 5:6-7 – “Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. Therefore do not be partakers with them…”

Philippians 3:1 – “Finally, my brethren, rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things again is no trouble to me, and it is a safeguard for you.”

Colossians 1:21-23 – “And although you were formerly alienated and hostile in mind, engaged in evil deeds, yet He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body through death, in order to present  you before Him holy and blameless and beyond reproach if indeed you continue in the faith firmly established and steadfast, and not moved away from the hope of the gospel that you have heard, which was proclaimed to all creation under heaven…”

I Thessalonians 3:5&8 – “For this reason, when I could endure it no longer; I also sent to find out about your faith, for fear that the tempter might have tempted you, and our labor should be in vain…. for now we really live, if you stand firm in the Lord.”

II Thessalonians 3:3-5 – “But the Lord is faithful, and He will strengthen and protect you from the evil one. And we have confidence in the Lord concerning you, that you are doing and will continue to do what we command. And may the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God and into the steadfastness of Christ.”

I Timothy 4:1 – “But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons…”
