Is the Bible Inspired?

October 23, 2017

2 Tim. 3:16 tells us: "All Scripture is inspired..." The word for "inspired" literally means that it is "God-breathed." So, when the Bible speaks of itself as being inspired, it means that it is the Word of God. While these claims of inspiration do not prove it is inspired, it does show that the Bible teaches that it is the Word of God and therefore, it's claims as such provide a large body of da-ta that cannot be ignored. The Bible uses the phrase "the Word of God" 394 times in the Old Testament alone. This means that the authors were aware they were writing as the mouthpieces of God. The New Testament frequently quotes the Old Testament as the "Word of God." If we accept Jesus as the Son of God, then His endorsement of the Old Testament in John 10:35 rings with final-ity when He described the Old Testament coming to them as the "word of God" which "cannot be broken." Jesus's use of the Old Testament demonstrated quite clearly, He believed it to be di-rectly from God. When Jesus read from Isaiah 61, "The Spirit of the LORD is upon me, because He anointed me to preach the gos-pel to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the cap-tives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free those who are oppressed, to proclaim the favorable year of the LORD" Jesus concluded by saying, "Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing." (Luke 4:17-21)
